The McLaren MP4/5 was a Formula One car designed by engineer Neil Oatley for the McLaren team, which competed in the 1989 Formula One season. It was driven by Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, and won the Constructors' Championship and Drivers' Championship.
The MP4/5 was powered by a Honda V10 engine and featured a semi-automatic gearbox, active suspension, and a carbon fiber monocoque chassis. It was also one of the first Formula One cars to use a high nose design, which allowed for better airflow to the front wing.
The car won 10 out of 16 races and claimed 15 pole positions during the 1989 season, with Senna securing his second Drivers' Championship. The following year, the MP4/5B was introduced, which had a revised chassis and suspension design. It also won the Constructors' Championship and the Drivers' Championship for Senna again.
The MP4/5 and its variants are considered one of the most successful and dominant Formula One cars of all time, winning 17 out of 32 races in two seasons. Its design and technology innovations set the standard for future Formula One cars and changed the sport forever.
